The COVID-19 SSH Data Portal - How it works

The COVID-19 SSH Data Portal provides integrated search, discovery, and linking to datasets published on the web relevant for COVID-19-related research in the Social Sciences and Humanities. The COVID-19 SSH Data Portal is an initiative of the European University Institute.

Open platform

The COVID-19 SSH Data Portal, based on the Open Source platform InvenioRDM functions as web-based search tool over structured information (metadata) describing datasets relevant for COVID-19-related research in the Social Sciences and Humanities. The customization code underlying the COVID-19 SSH Data Portal will soon be released opely on GitHub.

Open metadata

Metadata are captured semi-automatically from distributed data providers on the web through a set of configured "harvesters" and, through a curation process, are assigned relevant subject keywords and mapped to a metadata schema compliant with DataCite. Dataset descriptions are regularly kept up-to-date through iterative checking over the original data providers information pages and APIs.

Each dataset description page provides active linking to:

  • The original description page on the data provider website
  • Direct link to the dataset [when feasible]
  • Direct link to the dataset documentation [when feasible]

Machine-readable metadata are also available through an Open Archive Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) gateway.

Each individual dataset descritpion page offers the option to download the specific metadata record in the following formats:

  • JSON
  • CLS
  • Datacite JSON
  • Datacite XML
  • Dublin Core XML
Access to lower-level REST APIs can be granted upon justified and specific individual request.
